Digital Marketing News Mid-September 2026: Missing Business Profile Stats, An AI Dashboard In Google Ads And A Shrinking Citations Panel
Everything that actually moved in search and ads this week, and what a busy business owner should do about it
The digital marketing news mid-September 2026 round-up is mostly about reporting this week, not rankings. Three of Google’s own dashboards are either blank, frozen or being rebuilt around AI, which makes it a bad week to judge your marketing by the numbers in front of you.
The Quick Version
If you have two minutes, here is the week in five lines. Nothing here means you need to change your website today, but one of them is worth a five minute check before Friday.
- Google Business Profile insights have shown no September data at all, eight days into the month.
- Google is emailing business owners asking them to confirm edits strangers have suggested to their listing, with a four day deadline.
- The Search Console links report has not had fresh data since around 8 August.
- Gemini powered AI dashboards are turning up inside some Google Ads accounts.
- Google is testing a narrower citations panel on AI Overviews, which could mean fewer clicks out to sites.
None of it needs a Tuesday morning emergency. Read the email one, ignore the panic on the rest.

Not sure what to act on first?
Most weeks the honest answer is nothing, and the useful work is somewhere else entirely. If you would rather someone else read this stuff every week and only tell you when it actually matters, that is most of what we do.

The Full Guide
If you are scanning the digital marketing news mid-September 2026 for the bit that affects you, it is the reporting. Four of the five stories are about numbers going missing or changing shape, not about your website doing anything wrong.
Your Google Business Profile stats have shown nothing all month
Google Business Profile insights have been blank for the whole of September so far. Search Engine Roundtable checked on 8 September and still saw no data at all, eight days into the month.
A delay of a few days is normal for that report. Eight days is not, and it means any “calls are down this month” conclusion you draw from it right now is drawn from an empty chart.
What to do: nothing, other than not making decisions on it. The data will very likely backfill. If you count calls or form fills anywhere else, use that number for September instead.
Google is emailing you to approve edits strangers made to your listing
Google has started sending business owners an email headed “Does this look right to you?”. It shows an edit a Google Maps user has suggested to your profile, in one reported case a change to the business name, with a yes and a no.
The email gives you four days to respond. That is the part worth caring about, because these land in the inbox nobody checks.
What to do: find out which email address is attached to your Business Profile and actually look in it. Rather than clicking through from the email, sign in to your profile directly and check what has been suggested. Miss the window on a wrong edit and you are trusting Google to guess correctly about your own business.
The Search Console links report has been frozen for a month
The links report in Google Search Console has not been refreshed since around 8 August. Search Engine Roundtable has been tracking the update dates because Google does not stamp that report with one.
So if you have been earning links since early August and seeing nothing appear, that is the report, not your links. It looks live because nothing on the screen tells you it is a month old.
What to do: nothing. Above all, do not go buying links because a stale report looks flat.
Google Ads is putting a Gemini dashboard in your account
Some advertisers are now seeing the AI dashboards Google showed off back in May. You type what you want to see in plain English, it builds the chart, then it writes a summary telling you why it thinks the numbers moved.
Google Ads has also started pushing recommendations you already dismissed back at you, with a note saying you still have dismissed recommendations on the campaign.
What to do: use the dashboard for questions, not for answers. And keep dismissing the recommendations you dismissed for a reason, because that nudge is how budgets quietly grow.
AI Overview citations are getting harder to see
Google is testing a noticeably thinner citations panel down the side of AI Overviews. The same links, less space, easier to scroll past.
It is a test, so it may never ship. But it points the same way everything else has this year: the answer gets the room and the sources get the margin.
What to do: nothing new this week. It is one more reason to be the site an answer gets built from, and to give people a reason to search your name rather than a generic question.
Common Mistakes
The mistakes that follow the digital marketing news mid-September 2026 are all the same mistake in different hats: treating a broken report as a broken business.
- Deciding your local visibility has collapsed because the Business Profile chart is empty.
- Leaving the “Does this look right to you?” email unopened until the four days are gone.
- Buying links because the Search Console links report has stopped moving.
- Letting the new Google Ads AI dashboard talk you into a change you cannot explain to anyone.
- Rebuilding your content around a citations panel that is still only a test.
DIY lane vs done for you lane
DIY lane:
Set a reminder for the first week of October to check whether your Business Profile data has backfilled. Log into the inbox attached to your Business Profile and clear it. Leave the links report alone. If the AI dashboard turns up in your Google Ads account, use it to ask what changed, then check the answer in the normal reports before you touch anything.
Done for you lane:
We read this every week so you do not have to, and we only get in touch when something actually needs doing. If you would rather your Business Profile, your Search Console and your ads account were somebody else’s problem, that is what we do.

Digital marketing news mid-September 2026 FAQs

Google Business Profile insights showing no data at all for September. It is not a ranking change, but it is the one most likely to make a business owner draw a wrong conclusion this month.
No. Google’s reporting has run late repeatedly this year and this looks like more of the same. Judge September on enquiries, calls and bookings instead, and give the data time to backfill.
Yes, if the suggested edit is wrong. Rather than clicking through from the email itself, sign in to your Business Profile directly and check what has been suggested there. You get four days.
Because Google has not refreshed it since around 8 August. The report carries no data date, so it looks current when it is not. Nothing is wrong with your links.
It is useful for asking quick questions of your own data. It is not a reason to hand over the decisions. Treat the summary it writes as a starting point, not a verdict.
