West Northamptonshire’s population rose 13.5 per cent between the 2011 and 2021 Censuses, from 375,100 to 425,700, the second largest increase in the East Midlands after Harborough. The council’s Local Plan puts Towcester itself at about 11,500 people and calls it the oldest town in Northamptonshire. BAE Systems runs a facility on Wood Burcote Road, Towcester Mill Brewery works out of the mill on Chantry Lane, and a few miles west sits the Silverstone estate.

That mix matters commercially, because engineering and motorsport pull a professional layer around them. Fabricators, machine shops, hauliers, recruiters, accountants and fit-out contractors all trade off proximity to Silverstone, and they are all researched online first. One detail worth getting right in your own copy: the estate is split. West Northamptonshire Council’s own planning reports say the circuit and the surrounding commercial area lie partly in Northamptonshire and partly in Buckinghamshire, with the boundary running just north of the main entrance. The town keeps its own calendar as well, with the Towcester Midsummer Music Festival running 18 to 21 June this year in its twenty-fourth year, and the English Greyhound Derby final held at the racecourse on 6 June 2026.

West Northamptonshire Council’s emerging Local Plan to 2041 names two existing Towcester employers: BAE Systems and Abaco Systems. BAE is still on Wood Burcote Road. Abaco’s registered office is now in Leicester, and the last officer with a Towcester correspondence address resigned in April 2021. That is a current council planning document naming an employer that has gone, which tells you how long a stale fact survives once it is written down.
