North Hertfordshire counted 133,200 people at the 2021 Census. The trading base here is unusually independent: the council’s town centre plan, published in July 2022, puts independents at 72 per cent of the town centre against a national benchmark of 57 per cent, with national multiples at 18 per cent and regional ones at 8. Willmott Dixon Holdings is registered at the Spirella Building on Bridge Road, and Altro, incorporated in 1919, still trades from Works Road.

That mix matters commercially, because a town of independents has no national marketing budget standing behind it. Shops, studios, trades, therapists, accountants and small manufacturers all work the same catchment, and every one of them gets looked up before it gets rung. The calendar is part of the appeal: Letchworth Open filled Broadway Gallery in June 2025 with what the Foundation calls a record 446 artworks, and the Standalone 10k closes the roads on Sunday 4 October 2026, starting from Standalone Farm on Wilbury Road.

The fact worth correcting is the one everybody offers first, that Letchworth was a dry town. It was never legally dry, and the referendum dates and first pub dates in circulation have no primary source behind any of them. What is documented is better anyway. The Skittles Inn on Nevells Road, built in 1906 and 1907 by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, was a temperance inn, and Historic England’s listing records that its entrance hall still holds the original bar counter designed for the sale of temperance beverages.
