Croydon’s population grew from 363,400 in 2011 to 390,800 in 2021, up 7.5 per cent against 7.7 per cent for London, and it ranked 16th of the 309 local authority areas in England, up one place in a decade. The ONS puts it as the tenth least densely populated of London’s 33 boroughs, with around 32 people on each football pitch sized area of land. Nothing is published for the town centre on its own at census level. BH Live, which runs Fairfield Halls, is registered at the Bournemouth International Centre. And Nestlé UK, whose tower defined the skyline for decades, announced on 4 January 2012 that it was moving its 840 head office staff to Gatwick by the end of that year; the company is now registered at Haxby Road in York.

Three things worth having straight before writing anything about this town. The Whitgift Centre redevelopment has still not reached a planning application. Croydon’s planning committee endorsed Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield’s masterplan framework on 27 February 2025, the council’s newsroom says the next step is for URW to submit an application, and in July 2026 the John Whitgift Foundation sold the centre’s freehold to URW for £31.5 million. The adopted local plan is still the Croydon Local Plan 2018: the review was submitted for examination on 29 November 2024, the council’s examination page says the hearings “came to an end on 23 October” without printing a year, and the main modifications still have a six week consultation to go through. And Croydon BID went to its levy payers for a fifth term from 21 September to 21 October 2026, on a proposed levy of 1.3 per cent for a term from 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2032; its 2021 renewal passed on 261 of 286 votes cast. The BID’s ballot page also says Croydon “has the largest youth population in London” without saying where the figure comes from, so we have not repeated it as fact.
