There is no council-published population figure for Reigate on its own, so here is what is published instead. The borough held 150,900 people at the 2021 Census, up 9.5 per cent from 137,800 in 2011. One correction worth having, because it comes up constantly. Reigate Castle is not a castle. Historic England’s listing for the gateway records that the castle “was a C12 construction of motte and bailey type with a shell keep, but none of the masonry survives”, that it had fallen into ruins by the sixteenth century, and that the process was completed in 1642. The castellated arch everybody photographs was built in 1777 by Richard Barnes, out of the castle’s own stones, in memory of William de Warrenne. It is a folly standing where a castle used to be, and the listing is for the gateway rather than the castle.
